“A Change in Charter Education”

People have been criticizing education, with their own opinions, however I have 4 main points that can help strengthen the school’s education system. One point is, being able to have a late start every Monday. Another point is more activities for the freshman’s and seniors, more foreign language classes, and more AP classes. With these changes, students, teachers, and the schools education system would have a more quality education, and more fun will be distributed.

Monday’s are the worst days when the weekend is over and it is time to go back to school. This is because, during the weekend students tend to go to sleep when they want and wake up when they want to. For example, students tend go to sleep late on Sunday and when it is time for school on Monday, they are either late to school or they do not go at all. So to help students bounce back on track from the weekend, schools should have a late start every Monday; meaning school starts at 9:45 instead of 8:00, that way EVERYONE will be at school ON TIME. Also students would be able to adjust to waking up at a certain time on Mondays, “The body be trained before the mind”. This means that, if the body is trained then it will become a habit for the body to adjust into just about anything.

This then leads to charter school having more activities for the freshmen’s and seniors. To keep them active in their studies, freshmen’s are practically new to the school and are unaware of their surroundings. Bring more activities for freshmen’s will help them be more excited about their education and will help them get to know their classmates better. However, for the seniors it’s there last year, so they should be able to have fun yet learn at the same time. “Amusement is for the sake of relaxation . . . enjoyment is universally acknowledged to contain an element not only for the noble but of the pleasant, for happiness is made up of both”.

As for Foreign Language; a class that needs to be taken for at least two years to meet college requirements, this is needed in EVERY school no exceptions. Foreign language is a very important class, whether it’s Spanish, Italian, Sign language, or French. It is good to know more than one language especially if you want to travel out of the country, and I grantee that students will meet someone in their life time that speaks one of these languages. “They should begin to practice early . . . when they are older they may be spared . . . thanks to knowledge which they acquired in their youth”. This means that children should be able to learn things when they are young, so that they will be able to consume whatever is being taught to them. However those who are older, and did not get the opportunity may not be judged but be spared.

Overcoming Procrastination

In a perfect world, just about everyone at some point in their life has been or will be a procrastinator. As a whole we put things off for several reasons. Some of them are because we just don’t want to do it, think or assume that we don’t have the time to do it or we just don’t like doing it… It’s a part of being human. Don Marquis, an American writer, poet and playwright said, “Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday”. I like to think he was saying that we have a tendency of thinking that we have lots of time before something is due.

The very reason that we do it is because we are afraid. We naturally have a fear of failure when things aren’t going well, so we avoid doing something. Another is because we feel we are too busy with other daily activities, like jobs and school for example. Unfortunately, another is because we believe procrastinating works. We have a tendency to do something we like or enjoy, instead of doing the task at hand. We also expect ourselves to be perfect. Procrastination can often guarantee failure, but believing that we are perfectionists makes us sometime to believe that we can do things half-hearted. We procrastinate by ignoring what we have to do or accomplish. We allow short breaks to become very long ones or we don’t finish at all. We focus our energy on one part of something, at the expense of the rest of it.

I am now using my time more wisely, since I have found many ways to combat and understand the reasons and symptoms of procrastination. I am sure this will not go away overnight or in a week, but it will take some time. All procrastinators will have to work on this. Me, I will take on this challenge and work hard on it as often as I can, so that I can accomplish the goals that I have set for my career. You can do this too. Minimizing procrastination will help me in becoming successful in that aspiration. “Until you value yourself, you will not value your time. And until you value your time you will not do anything with it.”-  M. Scott Peck
